REQUIREMENTS FOR B TROOP HORSES


 

The Fort Huachuca Cavalry Association seeks quality horses for US Cavalry ceremonial work. The Association requires all candidate horses be examined by the Fort Huachuca Veterinarian and representatives of B Troop, U.S. Cavalry (Memorial) prior to purchase. Candidate horses will be kept for a period of up to two weeks for examination. During the examination period, candidate horses will be examined, ridden, and tested for suitability for cavalry work. Owners may be present during these times. The horse needs to meet the following criteria:

  • Good health and conformation. Must be sound and have no history of significant problems such as founder/laminitis, navicular disease, etc (must have medical records)

  • Age: between 4 and 10 years old primary, with exceptions up to 14 years old.

  • Size: No shorter that 14.3 hands and no taller than 16.2 hands (weight: between 1000 - 1300 lbs). 15.1 to 16 preferred.

  • Strength: Must be able to carry a 200 lb rider and 75 lbs of equipment at a maneuvering gallop.

  • Breed: Quarterhorse, Morgan, mixes, etc. No full-blood Arabians. Quarterhorse preferred.

  • Sex: Geldings only

  • Color: Dark color (bays, blacks, chestnuts, sorrels, chocolates, etc)

  • Training: Must be western neck reined, able to take correct lead, side pass, backup, transition easily between gaits, and be suitable to be ridden by beginners

  • Ground manners: Must single-tie, be groomed, and accept tack without incident.

  • Good disposition: Must remain reasonably calm despite loud noises and other distractions. Must not kick, bite, or flee during normal handling. Must be accustomed to people and have a gentle disposition.

  • Must be able to load and unload into horse trailer without problems.

  • Must be able to shoe horses without drugging/sedating.
